Measuring the Hubble Constant with the Hubble Space Telescope
Ten years ago our team completed the Hubble Space Telescope Key Project on
the extragalactic distance scale. Cepheids were detected in some 25 galaxies
and used to calibrate four secondary distance indicators that reach out into
the expansion field beyond the noise of galaxy peculiar velocities. The result
was H_0 = 72 +/- 8 km/sec/Mpc and put an end to galaxy distances uncertain by a
factor of two. This work has been awarded the Gruber Prize in Cosmology for

Complex Velocity Fields in the Shell of T Pyxidis
We present spatially-resolved, moderate-resolution spectrophotometry of the
recurrent nova T Pyx and a portion of the surrounding shell. The spectrum
extracted from a strip of width 10'' centered on the star shows well-known,
strong emission lines typical of old novae, plus a prominent, unfamiliar
emission line at 6590 Angstroms. This line, and a weaker companion at 6540
Angstroms which we also detect, have been previously reported by Shahbaz et
al., and attributed to Doppler-shifted H alpha emission from a collimated jet
emerging from T Pyx. We demonstrate that these lines are instead due to [NII]
6548, 6584 from a complex velocity field in the surrounding nebula. The
comments of past workers concerning the great strength of HeII 4686 in T Pyx

The tests were conducted at Mach numbers from 0.40 to 0.90, at angles of attack up to 45 deg for the lower Mach numbers, and at angles of sideslip up to 15 deg. The model variations under study included adding a canard surface and deflecting horizontal tails, ailerons, and rudders
Hybrid-learning for social design
Underlying causes of conflict, inequity, and injustice remain deeply entrenched in the lives of people ranging from impoverished villages to overpopulated megalopolises. To help address these complex issues, social design brings together designers from varying disciplines to address the needs of the community. While universities across the world recognize the need to introduce social design pedagogy into their curriculum, many programs remain confined within Western post-graduate education. In response, two multidisciplinary professors initiated a team-taught \u27Design for Social Change\u27 course in an undergraduate design program in Dubai, UAE. Open to students across disciplines, the course followed a hybrid-learning approach to planning, conducting, and evaluating learning activities. The methodology empowered students to determine their project interest, cooperatively build research, and value their diverse skills. This paper introduces the notion of hybrid-learning, collabor-active team-teaching in an interdisciplinary classroom, and applies the methodology to a social design course in the MENA region. Estimation of slow- and fast-cycling soil organic carbon pools from 6N HCI hydrolysis
Includes bibliographical references (pages 238-239).Acid hydrolysis is used to fractionate the soil organic carbon pool into relatively slow- and fast-cycling compartments on soils from Arizona, the Great Plains states and Michigan collected for carbon isotope tracer studies related to soil carbon sequestration, for studies of shifts in C3/C4 vegetation, and for "pre-bomb" soil-carbon inventories. Prior to hydrolysis, soil samples are first treated with cold 0.5-1N HCl to remove soil carbonates if necessary. Samples are then dispersed in a concentrated NaCI solution (p~1.2 g cm-3) and floated plant fragments are skimmed off the surface. After rinsing and drying, all remaining recognizable plant fragments are picked from the soil under 20x magnification. Plant-free soils, and hot, 6NHCl acid-hydrolysis residue and hydrolyzate fractions are analyzed for carbon content, δ 13C and 14C age, and the carbon distribution is verified within 1-2% by stable-carbon isotope mass balance. On average, the recalcitrant residue fraction is 1800 year older and 2.6‰ more 13C-depleted than total soil organic carbon. A test of hydrolysis with fresh plant fragments produced as much as 71-76% in the acid-hydrolysis residue pool. Thus, if plant fragments are not largely removed prior to hydrolysis, the residue fraction may date much younger than it actually is.Publisher version: https://journals.uair.arizona.edu/index.php/radiocarbon/article/view/1903/1904
